What happens when people no longer trust the information shaping their communities? ℹ️ At this week’s UCL Great Debate, Internews Europe CEO Meera Selva reflected on what it takes to build information environments that people actually trust and use in an age when journalism is under attack. 💬 “We’ve seen more journalists killed doing their jobs in the last few years than in living memory and it’s creating a culture of impunity.” As journalism becomes more dangerous, the systems people rely on for trusted information become more fragile. When people don’t feel seen or understood, trust in information breaks down, preventing them from making informed decisions, be they everyday choices or participation in public life. 💬 “Conspiracy spaces exist because no one else is talking to those audiences. Conspiracy theories are what end up reaching them and resonating.” 💬 “A lot of our susceptibility to misinformation comes from the fact that it’s delivered by people who feel relatable. Traditional journalism isn’t always that counterpart.” That’s why building stronger, locally rooted information ecosystems is key to ensuring people can find and trust the information they rely on. Thank you to Charlie Morris, Dimitri Andreou and the rest of the Students' Union UCL team for convening this conversation. Many thanks also to Ozan Selcuk for chairing. #Journalism #InformationEcosystems #DigitalRights #Democracy #LocalMedia #MediaSupport

so very proud of this team and all they achieved in Ukraine
After 3.5 years, the Support for Ukrainian Media Survival (SUMS) project has wrapped up, and I couldn't be prouder of what our team and our partners built together. Funded by Sweden 🇸🇪 through Sida, SUMS awarded 27 grants and supported 106 independent Ukrainian media outlets and 486 journalists throughout some of the most difficult years in Ukrainian media history. From national outlets rebuilding their commercial models from scratch to hyperlocal newsrooms in frontline communities where no other independent media operates, the project was a reminder of why this work matters. The numbers tell part of the story: 79% of supported outlets adopting new financial diversification practices, 45 published investigations that contributed to real accountability outcomes, 30 newsrooms with new gender-sensitive editorial policies, and 123 million content views — that's a real audience that kept receiving independent information throughout the war. Newsrooms that started the project in survival mode ended it with functioning commercial departments, paid subscriber communities, and the organisational foundations to keep going independently. But what I'll carry with me is the people — journalists who kept reporting under shelling, editors who built something lasting under impossible conditions, and a team that delivered with professionalism and care every single day. And none of this would have been possible without the Armed Forces of Ukraine — whose courage and sacrifice make it possible for us to keep building independent media, civil society, and democratic institutions even in the middle of the war. Thank you, Internews, for trusting me with this project. Thank you to Sweden for the sustained commitment to independent journalism in Ukraine when it mattered most. And thank you to my incredible London-based team — you know who you are :) 🩷 On to what's next.

Connectivity, language, trust, and representation all impact access to information ℹ️ New research by our partner CFI, agence française de développement médias, highlights key barriers facing underserved communities in the DRC, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia: 1️⃣ Word of mouth fills gaps in rural areas — trusted, but not always reliable 2️⃣ Radio remains essential — but community stations are under threat 3️⃣ Language is a major barrier — communities want simpler, local-language content 4️⃣ Relevance drives trust — people disengage when content doesn’t reflect their realities 5️⃣ Journalists face constraints — resources limit inclusive reporting 📖 Read more: https://lnkd.in/exXUiMuW This work is made possible through funding from the European Union. #AccessToInformation #LocalMedia #CommunityMedia #Inclusion #MediaSupport

What does effective media literacy look like in 2026? 📰🔍 In Kyrgyzstan, local journalists are showing that it starts with listening to communities and responding to their needs. Through the “Aldanba” (Don’t Be Fooled) campaign, the Kyrgyz-language outlet “Üidö” is helping diverse audiences navigate AI-generated content, misinformation, and verification challenges. Their approach combines audience insight, local expertise, and sustained engagement, building stronger, more resilient information ecosystems. At its core is a simple idea: responsibility begins the moment you hit “repost". Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/etqSqAZP This article is also available in English. See the link in the comments. Around the world, in war zones, refugee camps and fragile democracies, brave local journalists risk their lives to ensure their communities have access to life-saving, accurate information ℹ️ Through our partnership with Surfshark, we provide 100 media organisations and civil society organisations operating in nine high-risk countries with Surfshark One subscriptions that mask IP addresses and bypass state-imposed firewalls. This shields reporters from surveillance, protects their sources, and lets them verify facts and publish content without fearing internet shutdowns. Secure, open access to information is a humanitarian and civic lifeline, enabling trusted local media to sustain information environments where communities can make informed decisions, even under threat. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e_e7y6rT #OnlineSafety #ProtectJournalists #MediaSupport #TechForGood
