California High-Speed Rail is one of the most significant infrastructure projects underway in the United States today. That's why I'm excited to share that the California High-Speed Rail Authority has approved the first phase of track and systems installation for the program. As part of the Kiewit, Stacy Witbeck and Herzog team, we're looking forward to helping deliver the track, overhead contact system, train control and communications infrastructure that will transform 119 miles of completed guideway in California's Central Valley into a true high-speed rail system. This next phase is where years of planning and construction come together to bring the system closer to operation: https://bit.ly/3RDDHUs I recently shared a few thoughts on what this milestone means for the future of rail transportation in California.

Kiewit is proud to be part of the American-led consortium selected by the California High-Speed Rail Authority to install electrified track and systems for the nation’s first true high-speed rail system. Together with Stacy Witbeck and Herzog, our team will help deliver the track, overhead contact system, train control and communications infrastructure needed to transform 119 miles of Central Valley guideway into an electrified high-speed rail system capable of speeds up to 220 mph. This milestone marks an important transition from major civil construction to railway installation, and another step forward for one of the most significant transportation infrastructure programs in North America.

The historic Glen Island Bridge is officially reopened nearly six months ahead of schedule. Originally built in 1930, the bridge serves as the only access point to Glen Island Park in New Rochelle, New York. To maintain access during construction, Kiewit designed and built a temporary bridge with a movable bascule span while crews rehabilitated the permanent structure. Work included steel girder repairs, installation of new floor beams and a concrete bridge deck, upgrades to the bridge’s electrical and mechanical systems and improvements to sidewalks and pedestrian railings. “Kiewit is proud to have successfully rehabilitated this historic bridge while preserving its character and improving long-term performance. This work required close coordination among the County, project partners and our crews through every phase of construction. The dedication and expertise demonstrated by our craft professionals throughout the project played a critical role in reaching this milestone safely and efficiently.” — Kiewit Project Manager Zane Pointon Crews will continue work this summer to remove the temporary bridge. Congratulations to our client, partners and the entire project team on the project’s success!

He’s almost ready to dig in. “Rocky,” the tunnel boring machine in Ellicott City, Maryland, is nearly fully assembled and preparing to begin work beneath Main Street. Once operational, Rocky will excavate a mile-long tunnel in Howard County capable of moving up to 26,000 gallons of water per second to the Patapsco River, helping protect this historic community from severe flooding. Getting Rocky to the site was no small task. He was transported from Ohio to Maryland in more than 40 truckloads before being reassembled underground. Substantial completion of the project is anticipated in fall 2027.

Before it became the largest onshore lifting device in the world, it started here. These photos show the assembly of our Heavy Lifting Device (HLD) in the early 2000s at Kiewit Offshore Services in Texas. Now standing 500 feet tall, the HLD has lifted nearly 560 million pounds since its first use in 2004.

What starts as a river crossing can change an entire community. Kiewit volunteers recently helped open a new bridge in Rwanda. Working alongside Fika, formerly Bridges to Prosperity, and local community members, the team spent nearly two weeks building the 95-meter-long Kamonyo Bridge and an additional footbridge near a local school to improve year-round access. From cable installation and swing fabrication to fencing, grading, painting and final bridge preparations, the team worked together to bring the project across the finish line. These bridges are more than structures. They are lifelines that connect rural communities to healthcare, education and employment, especially during seasons when rivers become impassable. We’re proud of the Kiewit employees who dedicated their time, skills and teamwork to make a lasting impact.
