1,152 Tablets, 15 Schools: Plan International Sierra Leone Advances Digital Learning
In continuation of our strides in transforming education through technology, we begin the roll out the #PikinTab Project funded by #ImagineWorldwide inpartnership with #MBSSE across 15 schools in Moyamba and Kailahun Districts, providing 1,152 digital learning tablets to children and schools as part of efforts to improve access to quality and inclusive education in Sierra Leone.
The initiative marks another significant milestone in our commitment to advancing innovative learning approaches that empower children, especially girls, to learn, lead, decide, and above all thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Implemented under the theme of strengthening access to quality education through technology, the #PikinTab Project introduces tablet-based learning aimed at improving literacy, numeracy, and foundational learning outcomes among children in underserved communities. The intervention also supports Sierra Leone’s broader education sector priorities around digital learning and equitable access to education.
The distribution of the tablets follows intensive capacity-building sessions for teachers, school leaders, and education stakeholders on how to facilitate, monitor, and support digital learning in classrooms. Teachers were trained not only on the technical use of the devices, but also on learner-centered approaches that ensure children interact safely and effectively with technology.
“This intervention is about more than just tablets. It is about unlocking opportunities, improving learning outcomes, and preparing children for a future where digital skills are essential,” a PISL representative noted.
For many pupils in the participating schools, the tablets represent their first direct interaction with digital technology in a learning environment. Excitement and curiosity filled classrooms as children explored interactive lessons designed to make learning more engaging, fun, and accessible.
Community leaders, education authorities, and parents have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that will strengthen teaching and learning in rural communities where access to educational resources remains limited.
The #PikinTab Project also reflects the growing importance of partnerships in driving sustainable development. Through the support of and collaboration with education stakeholders, PISL continues to champion innovative solutions that place children at the center of development programming.
