Before treatment was developed in 2017, almost no babies born with the most severe form of the genetic disorder spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) lived to age two. This month, we and our partners at National Birth Defects Prevention Network are sharing information, resources, and real stories to help more families and providers recognize CMV and its impact. The World Cup and 2026 summer travel season are right around the corner – are you and your family up to date on your immunizations? Remember that more people means more potential for the spread of disease. When people from across the country and world come together, we can also be exposed to new diseases we aren’t immune to. Protect yourself and your family by getting vaccinated, staying home when sick, and being aware of disease spread in your location of travel. For more information, visit Guidance for Travelers: https://lnkd.in/gA7pbYDV

Graduate students at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health got a front-row seat to environmental public health work. Staff from the Minnesota Department of Health’s Site Assessment and Consultation and Lead Risk Assessment Units visited an Environmental Measurements lab course to walk nine graduate students through soil contamination fundamentals, and introduce them to soilSHOP, MDH's community-based soil screening and outreach program. The session covered: ▪ Soil sampling techniques and conceptual site modeling ▪ A live XRF demonstration on student-collected soil samples ▪ The interdisciplinary nature of environmental health: hydrogeologists, toxicologists, and epidemiologists This is environmental public health in practice: characterize the problem → engage the community → understand the risk → minimize exposure. If you're studying environmental public health, state agencies are doing meaningful, community-centered work. https://lnkd.in/gHvqhQ-8 #EnvironmentalHealth #soilSHOP #GradSchool #PublicHealthCareers
