RightsCon reposted this
A month ago, I was packing my suitcase for Lusaka. Instead of opening the 14th edition of RightsCon, I found myself helping lead one of the most difficult decisions of my tenure at Access Now: determining whether it was safe and responsible for the community to proceed. Over the past month, I have reflected on what the cancellation of RightsCon 2026 means for everyone involved, especially the broader human rights and civic space ecosystem. In this article, I share five lessons that have stayed with me: - The power of community in moments of crisis - The impact on local civil society in Zambia - Why authoritarian actors understand the power of convening - The new geopolitical risks facing global human rights gatherings - Why resilience will define the future of our movement What happened in Zambia is bigger than RightsCon. It’s a reminder that protecting civic space requires collective action from governments, donors, convenors, civil society organizations, and communities around the world. I would welcome your reflections and thoughts.
