SO WHY DOES THE TV UPFRONT PERSIST? How did the upfront start? How does it work? Why do advertisers continue to buy TV ad time in this manner? What about "principal buying" in the upfront? Must a single audience "currency" be the "standard" negotiating metric? This article really hits on something we are seeing every day in the insurance space. For a long time, distribution was mostly a numbers game. More appointments, more emails, more calls, more marketing. But the market is changing fast. Agencies and producers are overloaded with generic outreach, and most of it gets ignored. What is starting to matter now is relevance. The organizations standing out are the ones that actually understand who they should be talking to, what those agencies care about, and how to communicate real expertise instead of just pushing volume. AI is definitely accelerating this shift, but I do not think AI replaces industry knowledge, relationships, or experience. If anything, it exposes weak strategy faster. There is already a huge amount of generic AI-generated content flooding the market, and most of it sounds the same. The firms that are going to win are the ones that combine good technology with strong data, real market understanding, and credibility. We are seeing this firsthand with agency data, SEO, website strategy, content development, and targeted outreach. Visibility matters more than ever right now, especially as buyers and producers increasingly use AI-driven platforms to research markets and solutions before they ever visit a website. New research out of McCombs, where I've taught digital marketing bootcamps, puts a number on something I've been saying for years: personalized targeting without transparency or consent doesn't just annoy people. It actively kills purchase intent. Marketing professor Wayne Hoyer studied 1,800 consumers and found that creepiness isn't a vague feeling. It's a structured emotional response with two distinct triggers: ambiguity ("what is this?") and perceived surveillance ("are they watching me?"). Together those two factors explained 75% of the discomfort consumers reported. The performance hit is real. Every unit increase in consumer reactance reduced willingness to buy by roughly half a point on a 7-point scale. And personalized ads nearly doubled the sense of being surveilled compared to non-personalized ads. Here's what should keep every marketing team up at night: the remediation options barely work. Transparency disclosures, good-intention messaging, discounts, limited effect. The study even tested cute kitten images. Marginally helpful. Once creepiness is triggered, you've already lost. Prevention is the only real answer. This is exactly why privacy-by-design isn't just a compliance posture. It's a performance strategy. The brands winning the next decade will be the ones who figured out that consent-based, transparent data practices aren't a constraint on personalization. They're the foundation of personalization that actually converts. The surveillance era of digital marketing has a ceiling. We're hitting it.
