  • Meet the people behind the work. Today we're highlighting Micheal Clawson, an Ironworker Foreperson with PCL Energy. PCL Energy: Micheal, tell us about your journey with PCL and the trades. Micheal Clawson: I have been with PCL Energy for approximately four years, on and off. A colleague referred me to the role, which is how I got my start here. I actually got my first taste of the construction industry pouring concrete while I was still in school, so the work has been part of my life for a long time. PE: What does a typical day look like for you on site? MC: Keeping the crew happy, between erecting steel and lifting equipment. That is the job in a nutshell. PE: What is your favourite part about the work? MC: Whether we are erecting steel or offloading dealers, we face new challenges daily. That variety is what keeps it interesting. PE: Who has influenced your growth along the way? MC: I would not point to a single mentor; it has been many people throughout the years. Every person I have worked with has contributed something to who I am professionally. PE: Is there a project that stands out for you? MC: Honestly, no single project stands out above the rest. Each one comes with its own unique challenges and teaches you something different. PE: What professional achievement are you most proud of? MC: I'm proud of the emotional intelligence I've built within the workplace. Being technically skilled matters, but knowing how to read a room, support your crew, and navigate relationships with empathy is something I have worked hard to develop, and I am proud of the impact it has had on the teams I am part of. PE: What about PCL's culture makes you proud to be part of the team? MC: The environment here genuinely encourages questions. No one should ever feel afraid to voice a new idea or ask for clarification, and at PCL, that is the culture we actually live. PE: What advice would you offer someone just starting with PCL? MC: No question is a dumb question. Ask everything. The people around you want to help, and the fastest way to grow is to stay curious and never be too proud to learn. PE: Tell us a bit about life outside of work. MC: Outside of work, I keep life pretty balanced. I unwind by spending time with my wife, stay active at the gym, and hit the road on my motorcycle. A perfect weekend looks like peace and quiet, good food, and lately, more time than I'd like to admit obsessing over my lawn. PE: What did you want to be when you grew up? MC: Successful. That was the goal then, and honestly, it still is. PE: Is there a fun fact about you that might surprise people? MC: I took my very first flight in October 2025, so I'm a pretty recent convert to air travel! PE: Thanks so much for sharing, Micheal, and for everything you bring to the team!

  • Our Employee Spotlight series continues with Paul Aeron Vista, Ironworker Foreman with PCL Energy. PCL Energy: Paul, tell us about your journey with PCL. Paul Vista: I have been with PCL for five years across three projects. I started at Inter Pipeline in Fort Saskatchewan, moved to Cascade Power in Edson, and I am currently almost two years into a project north of Sherwood Park. My path into ironwork started when I was working as a labourer. I looked up one day and saw someone walking high on structural steel, and something just clicked. PE: What does your role look like day to day? PV: As a foreperson, my focus is on planning and organizing work, managing materials, and interpreting drawings accurately. I work closely with my crew to coordinate tasks, solve problems in the field, and make sure everything gets done safely and efficiently. PE: What do you enjoy most about the work? PV: Working with steel and watching a project come together from start to finish. There is something rewarding about seeing planning, teamwork, and hard work transform drawings and materials into a finished structure. PE: How has mentorship played a role in your development? PV: I have been fortunate to have Josh Wilman and Michael Birkett as mentors. Both trusted me, recognized my eagerness to learn, and pushed me to be confident in my abilities. Now that I am in a foreperson role, I try to pay that forward and continue mentoring others. PE: Is there a project that stands out for you? PV: My favourite project to date has been the Cascade Power project in Edson. It gave me great exposure, helped me grow as an ironworker, and allowed me to be part of a strong team that bonded on and off site. PE: What about PCL's culture makes you proud to be part of the team? PV: The safety culture is something I value. PCL also provides opportunities to grow and improve, and the team environments it creates are strong. PE: What advice would you offer someone just starting with PCL? PV: Stay focused and never stop learning from the people around you. Everyone has something to teach you. Your attitude and willingness to take on new challenges will open doors you may not even see yet. PE: Tell us a bit about life outside of work. PV: After work, I unwind by cooking supper and spending time with my wife, Noreen, and my two sons, Avery and Alonzo. An ideal weekend starts with a morning swim with the kids and ends with a family movie. I swam competitively in the Philippines, so seeing my kids share that love for the water means a lot. Fun fact: I started competitive swimming at age eight and went on to captain the swim team at the University of Santo Tomas while earning my degree in Information Science. PE: Who would you like to nominate for the next Employee Spotlight? PV: I would like to nominate Michael Clawson. PE: Thank you for sharing, Paul. Your passion for the trade and commitment to your team reflect what PCL is all about.
