Over the past year, MIG partnered with the City of Wildwood, MO, to develop the City's first Historic Preservation Plan. This Plan advances the City's preservation program over the next 10 years, highlighting known assets such as Route 66, while recognizing and elevating unique features of the community's story including its natural landscape and underrepresented histories of African American and Indigenous communities. MIG and the City conducted a robust engagement program to develop the Vision Elements, Goals, and Strategic Actions for this 10-year Plan to ensure the Plan reflected community priorities and will have community-wide implementation support upon adoption. #NationalHistoricPreservationMonth

Despite its relative anonymity beyond Civil War history buffs, Brandy Station Battlefield in Culpeper County, VA, played a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the American Civil War—a battle in June 1863 opened the Gettysburg Campaign and precipitated a shift in momentum to the Union Army. It's now the Commonwealth’s newest state park! Supported by matching grants from the American Battlefield Protection Program and the American Battlefield Trust, MIG led the development of a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) for the historic battlefield with Page & Turnbull, Groundwork Preservation, Hyndland Group, and Southern Georgia University. The project merged two leading methodologies: a cultural landscape framework and an archaeological survey approach to military landscapes known as KOCOA. This deepened the understanding of the battlefield’s significance, providing a fine-grained identification and assessment of the existing landscape’s historical integrity. Berkeley Haas Entrepreneurship Hub recently received a 2026 Preservation Design Award CA Preservation Foundation in the category of Restoration. MIG | PGA served as the landscape architect on the project, partnering closely with UC Berkeley and the design team to rehabilitate the site while respecting the integrity of the Julia Morgan-designed building. Improvements included creating a new patio where scholars and students can gather and share ideas, providing a fully accessible path to the building and creating welcoming garden setting for the patio and building. “Giving the space new use and new life can bring people together and facilitate great minds from across the country to connect,” said MIG | PGA Principal Cathy Garett. May 9 marked the grand reopening of the South Park Community Center—10 years in the making and well worth the wait. The revitalized space features a new play area, multi-purpose court, lighted synthetic playfield, off-leash dog park, spray park, and a fully renovated center. Solar panels generate 50 kW of clean energy, helping power air conditioning so the facility can serve as a community cooling center. MIG was honored to partner with Seattle Parks to help bring this community vision to life. "Community centers provide an important neighborhood gathering space—and this project delivers so much more," said Seattle Mayor Katie B. Wilson. "From athletes and kids at play to neighbors and their pets, there’s something for everyone." Opening day included a vibrant community parade and remarks from project partners, including Seattle Parks and Recreation, Duwamish River Community Coalition Youth Corps, Seattle Academy, and the One Roof Foundation.

Public gardens provide us with wonderful spaces where we can relax and enjoy the outdoors. They can also offer valuable educational opportunities about the native plants, as well as the history of an area. This National Public Gardens Week, we are highlighting MIG | PGA's work on the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah, CA, that was recently featured in a National Trust for Historic Preservation article “9 Tips On Planting Your Garden from Experts at Historic Sites.” The Wild Gardens at the Museum combines the beauty of native plants along with historical exhibits positioned throughout the planting design that educates visitors about land management practices of the Pomo people of the Ukiah Valley, and showcases modern-day techniques in resource preservation, water conservation, and green building. MIG's Cultural Places recently completed work on a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) for Channel Island National Park’s Santa Rosa Island. Working with Hennebery Eddy and the National Park Service, the project team had the unique task of carefully integrating existing and expanding recreational and research uses into the island’s sensitive habitat, while preserving character-defining features associated with the island's centuries-long ranching history. The CLR prioritizes the stabilization of ranching features and the regeneration of natural resources. Recommendations include focusing on the ranch’s former headquarters as an arrival point for visitors, identifying opportunities for accessible circulation, wayfinding, and lodging that are compatible with the ranching character of the island.
