What happens when a Zoox robotaxi encounters something it’s never seen before? In most driving situations, patterns repeat, like intersections, lane changes, and pedestrians crossing mid-block. But occasionally, the road throws something unexpected, from debris in the lane to atypical construction, scenarios that don't match anything in the training data. These are edge cases, and they’re among the hardest problems to solve in autonomous driving. At Zoox, we don’t wait for edge cases to find us on the road. We build them in simulation, designing environments specifically to push our vehicle’s software to its limits, so if these scenarios do occur, we’re prepared. Every time Zoox enters a new city, the data starts pouring in. Road geometry, traffic light timing, environmental details, and raw information accumulating at scale. But data on its own doesn’t drive decisions. Someone has to understand how to extract information and insights, organizing data into a digestible format. That’s where Eric Chu comes in. He joined Zoox seven years ago as a Software Engineer in motion planning before building the data science team and systems that turn raw data into actionable insights. Today, as Director, Data Science, Eric and his team solve open-ended problems by drawing on mathematics, computer science, AI, machine learning, and statistics, transforming what the road gives us into insights that shape how we build. 💬 “Growing into a leadership role is like music; there’s a difference between understanding the theory, how chords fit, what the various meters are, rhythms, and polyrhythms, and actually playing the music. One involves just your brain; the other involves your whole being. For anyone specifically entering the field of data science, my advice is to become what I call a third-culture person.
