David Grayson's call for a sustainability "reset" resonates deeply with what we're experiencing in higher education. His five priorities map remarkably well to the transformation needed in our sector. On focus, too many institutions have tried to be everything to everyone. At Unity Environmental University, we've concentrated on what we do best, preparing the sustainability workforce, while dramatically reducing costs and expanding access. Sometimes focus means saying no to good ideas in service of great impact. On strategic fit, sustainability can't be a separate initiative. We've embedded it as our core mission, building every program around preparing professionals who will lead the transition he describes. Our students (70% Pell eligible, 35% first-generation) aren't learning about sustainability as theory. They're becoming the practitioners corporations desperately need. His point about "honest examination and reset" is crucial. We assumed higher ed's traditional model would adapt. It hasn't. The reset required is fundamental, not incremental. The narrative piece is particularly important. We need to stop positioning sustainability as sacrifice and start framing it as Grayson suggests; innovation, competitiveness, health, legacy. That's the story that builds political durability and attracts the talent pipeline business needs. The corporate world's sustainability reset won't succeed without a parallel reset in how we prepare the workforce to execute it.
