Check out these before / after pictures of a pilot "Community Corner" on Cortland in Bernal Heights installed just 2 weeks ago. Thanks to Alec Hawley who came up with the concept of Community Corners and who has been pushing for these (and demonstrating them IRL) for many years. This Cortland corner is just a pilot and there are still more issues to work out, but the community response has been phenomenal so I'm excited to share this work! Kieran Farr shared thisI post a lot about 3DStreet, but some of my favorite moments in the past week has been through my work as a volunteer organizer with the Sierra Club, San Francisco Bay Chapter: Last Monday I helped neighbors on Cortland advocate for safer streets and planters in daylighting zones at the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center (thanks Sulaiman Hyatt!), Wednesday I joined City staff at Cayuga Playground Park for community outreach about a planned Green Infrastructure project on and around the Cayuga Slow Street (thanks Sarah Bloom !), Thursday I hosted a D9 Meet and Greet coffee (thanks Luke Tate for help with this!), and over the weekend my kids joined me for a watershed history bike tour with PODER (People Organizing to Demand Environmental & Economic Rights). At all these events two things is clear: kids are part of the advocacy movement, and everyone likes green infrastructure! Let's have more!

Kieran Farr shared thisMy favorite session from last week's The World Bank Transforming Transportation conference was a side session hosted by Global Designing Cities Initiative and World Resources Institute about designing safer "School Streets" with examples from their work around the globe. It was heartening to hear how similar the challenges are from my local advocacy work here in San Francisco, thank you to awesome presentations from Claudia Adriazola, Skye Duncan, Jessica Kisner, and Aiga Stokenberga. I loved seeing the bias for action and experimentation like a few of these screenshots illustrate. Extra kudos to Aiga who was able to explain global development bank investment thesis in the most compact format I've ever seen!

Kieran Farr shared thisThank you The World Bank for hosting the Transforming Transportation conference in Washington DC last week, providing an opportunity to meet so many virtual collaborators IRL like Carlos Felipe Pardo and Sam Johnson and catchup with old friends like Paul Supawanich and Jarrett Stoltzfus. I was blown away to meet real life 3DStreet users such as country officials who worked with us on the Dodoma, Tanzania transport visualization project. And of course it was a blast to make new friends like Brittany N Montgomery, PhD , Aimee Gauthier, Harriet Tregoning, Justyn Huckleberry, and the Despacio crew Lina López, Maria F. Ramirez, and Camilo Urbano. Stoked to work with folks on-site to use 3DStreet to design a pavement to parks and BRT concept in front of the Bank in DC. It could happen! :)

It's been a wild ride watching the team grow from a scrappy startup to an industry leading force in M&E. If you would have told me eight years ago that we would help deliver the biggest annual events in sports, power the top streaming services, and create such innovation and value in the industry, I wouldn't have believed it. What an amazing experience it's been to be able to "grow up" with a company that supported every personal and professional milestone in my life. Thank you to the incredible BitmovinBitmovin team members and thank you to all of our wonderful partners throughout the years. There are too many to name, but I will always look back on the work that we delivered together fondly. I will be cheering Bitmovin and you all on from the sidelines. Stay tuned for what's next!

With a dream team of recent NYU grad Malik Salman and Prof. Takahiro Yabe, we find a causal increase in bikeshare trips at stations that lie adjacent to protected bike lanes. This is one of the largest studies to date demonstrating the specific benefit of protected lanes, relative to painted lanes and sharrows. I had my doubts about paying money for something that I could probably figure out eventually on my own. I decided to enroll anyway. And wow deluxe, I am glad I did. No joke, this workshop pretty much changed my life. I am probably still scratching the surface, but it can certainly do a lot alongside my discernment and guidance. Build and play with your favorite molecules, visualize the impact of temperature and statistical ensembles, and make reactions happen on the fly. When Meta’s AI for Chemistry efforts kicked off ~6 years ago with the release of the OC20 dataset, generalizable models for chemistry seemed like a long shot. In 2025, the release of the Universal Model for Atoms and others like it led to more and more of my friends in the research community finding these universal models to be useful in day-to-day research activities. Since its release, the UMA has been used by computational researchers to study inorganic materials, heterogeneous catalysis, transition metal complexes, and organic chemistry reactions, among many others. But the more our team played with the UMA and found it useful for random chemistry examples, we kept getting the feeling that there was a bigger opportunity here beyond the traditional comp chem/materials community and that led us to the UMA playground we’re releasing this week. We’re excited to see how the UMA playground can be used for education (high school, undergraduate, graduate) and research. If you have ideas or are interested in partnering, get in touch!

Kieran Farr reacted on thisKieran Farr reacted on thisIt’s no secret that I’m laser-focused on housing policy. But I’ve also gotten quite active in trying to improve pedestrian/bike safety. Sidewalks, bike lanes, and transit stops get us from point a to point b, and we have to make sure they are safe and accessible. I have three bills in the transportation space this year, each addressing a key piece of how we navigate our communities every day. 1. AB 2015 requires Caltrans to conduct a comprehensive study of how mapping apps impact our local roads. Heavy traffic and high speeds belong on the freeway and arterial roads—not in our neighborhoods where we walk, bike, and play. 2. AB 1976 modernizes local & state processes to implement active transportation projects to increase bike/ped safety. We’re working to ensure appropriate community engagement, while still streamlining projects. Proud to announce AARP, CA YIMBY, SPUR, and others are in support. 3. AB 2168 modifies the Active Transportation Program (the state’s primary funding source for bike/ped infrastructure) to include transit access as priority. Other changes include measures to encourage timely use of awarded dollars, so these projects are completed without delay. Together these bills will help keep heavy traffic off residential streets, streamline safety improvement projects for bicyclists & pedestrians, and improve transit access. Our streets should be safe & accessible for everyone–whether you walk, roll, bike, drive, or take transit.

Kieran Farr liked thisI can understand why parents who bought their teen a misleadingly marketed electric moped would want elected officials to do something. Adding thousands of dollars of cost and licensing requirements to the majority of e-bikes sold in CA punishes Californians from all walks of life. My text to one of the AB1557’s authors below: —— … I used to run Scoot, the electric moped service in San Francisco. I just heard about AB 1557. I take my kids around SF on an electric cargo bike with a 750W hub motor. My joke is it’s our station wagon. We are a one car household. A bike with a 250W mid drive motor that could carry my kids would have cost us $2000 more and might not make it up our hilly street. The argument that AB1557 matches Europe’s regs doesn’t hold up. In Europe many people’s e-bikes are leased through their employers with a tax deduction that allows them to pay a modest monthly fee instead of the $4000+ list price. The little ebike rebates we have in the US wouldn’t help enough. AB1557 would price thousands of families out of an ebike and put more cars on the road just to get some teenagers off their misleadingly marketed electric mopeds. You can protect kids without smothering affordable electric transportation. I would be happy to help you figure that out after AB1557 gets shelved. Sent with much respect for you and the difficult and important work that you do.Kieran Farr liked this🚲⚡ California is funding e-bike rebates with one hand and trying to ban e-bikes with the other. Two bills just cleared committee that would do exactly that. ❌ AB 1557 (Papan) would impose a 250-watt motor cap, effectively banning hub-drive e-bikes — they cannot climb California hills at that wattage. It would decrease the top speed of Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes. It departs from the three-class framework used in 45 other states, which I helped pass in California in 2016 as AB 1096. ❌ AB 1942 (Bauer-Kahan) would require DMV registration and license plates for Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes. Treating bicycles like cars. 🪪 Neither bill addresses the actual problem on our streets: illegal e-motos falsely marketed as e-bikes. 💰 The fiscal contradiction: ▪️ California Air Resources Board allocated $31M for income-qualified e-bike vouchers ▪️ San Francisco Public Utilities Commission Electrify My Ride rebates low-income SF riders ▪️ Ava Community Energy is distributing $10M in rebates through 2026 Many of the e-bikes these programs fund would be rendered non-compliant under AB 1557. California has spent $1.84B on EV subsidies; e-bikes already outsell EVs here without comparable support. We'd be paying twice — subsidize the cheaper climate solution, then suppress it. 🤦 🏛️ What's next: Both bills head to Appropriations, chaired by Buffy Wicks. I was elected along with a new leadership after decades of NIMBYism, supporting 15 endorsements in the first year including a groundbreaking endorsement of the immediate conversion of the Great Highway into a people’s park, which was a reversal from previous administration. -

I've been crunching the Seattle-area startup funding numbers from the latest PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor report on venture deal activity (with help from Claude and fact-checking from Gemini). Here's what the historical trends look like for the Seattle region. The big trend nationally and locally: bigger checks are going to fewer companies. Seattle ranked 7th in the U.S. by capital invested but 10th by deal count in Q1 — the lowest number of deals since mid-2020. AI and space companies dominated the top rounds. We know more about the surface of Mars than the ocean floor. 🌊🪼 That's about to change. 🇺🇸 San Francisco's Apeiron Labs raised $9.5M Series A for autonomous underwater vehicles that monitor subsurface ocean data. Led by Dyne Ventures, RA Capital Management Planetary Health, and S2G Investments. Founded by Ravi Pappu (former CTO of In-Q-Tel, the CIA's venture capital arm), Apeiron builds low-cost AUVs that dive 400 meters up and down the water column, sampling temperature, salinity, and acoustics. Problem: Getting subsurface ocean data has always been expensive and slow. Ships cost $100K/day. Literally.... an expedition. Apeiron's solution is 3ft, 20 lb AUVs that deploy from boats or aircraft, connect to cloud-based systems, and refine ocean models in real-time. Who's lining up for this data? — Fisheries managing prime fishing waters — Offshore wind developers selecting sites — Climate researchers tracking ocean health Apeiron reports 100-fold cost reduction in ocean data collection compared to ship-based methods. The goal for next year is 1,000. Great Bloomberg Green interview with Brian Marrs on Microsoft's ambitious carbon negative by 2030 goal and the real hard work behind getting there. The intersection of AI's explosion, energy, and carbon removal is a once-in-a-humanity convergence of concerns and it's been inspiring to watch Microsoft's leadership here. It's no secret they are the carbon removal market (~80% of global demand), but they are building the market they know the planet needs. Their investment in data centers ($80b), renewable energy (34 gigawatts, one of the largest in the world), and carbon removal (conservatively >$2b) put them on par with the expenditure of small countries.
