Lisa Marie Basile posted thisAs a child & teenager, I spent long hours at our local library. It was a sort of fever dream walking down the aisles, sitting on the carpet, and diving endlessly into the beauty of books. Around the time of the millennium, I would arrive early on Saturdays to rent a computer because we didn't have one at home, and I'd spend the afternoon writing in my online journal (Xanga, anyone?). Sometimes my friends and I would come together and build websites (Gurlpages!). It was an era. It was defining. It felt boundless. And it gave me real skills I use today. I'm so glad that now, as a professional writer, I can give back to my own local library. I began teaching poetry and nonfiction writing workshops at the Jersey City Creative Arts Center last year, and I'll be guiding classes at another branch in the spring. Libraries are doing the Good Work. Offering free and accessible workshops to the public is a way to deepen empathy, encourage real humanity in a time of endless AI, and promote curiosity and creativity. I believe this is core to a healthy society. So glad to be part of it!

Lisa Marie Basile shared thisA few years ago, my father was diagnosed with polycythemia vera, a rare blood cancer that causes the body to produce too many red blood cells, requiring ongoing management with frequent phlebotomy and chemotherapy. As a health journalist, my work allows me to stay closely connected to emerging research and evolving clinical guidance, and I'm SO grateful for that skill set. Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the American Society of Hematology’s Annual Meeting in Orlando, where I covered the conference in real time for MDLinx. The meeting spanned everything from the latest advances in blood cancer therapies—many of them driven by women leading truly groundbreaking work, fyi!—to sessions examining the FDA’s newest findings on drug safety and risk. In many ways, this work—and all of my work—is deeply personal, shaped by the fact that I began my career in health and medical journalism by writing first-person accounts from my own experience as a patient. Lisa Marie Basile posted thisPeople always ask me how I got into health and medical writing. The answer is that the path was about as non-linear as it gets—but I'm deeply in love with where I've ended up. Here's the story: I'd been freelancing since college (so, around 2009)—everything from obituaries and celebrity gossip to to wacky, ehow.com articles for content mills. I was never not freelancing, even through FT editorial gigs. But health writing just wasn't part of my wheelhouse, unless it was about, say, a celebrity diagnosis or wellness routine. It wasn't until about 2016 that health & medical writing became my focus (and my passion). Around then, I was officially diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (#ankylosingspondylitis) and found myself writing about the experience from a patient perspective. I was hired to write about my experience by incredible patient advocacy organizations and chronic illness platforms (like Health Union, Creakyjoints, Bionews, Inc.). Around 2017, I started a FT job at a health brand and wrote & edited health blogs, copy, and community content—but I got too sick to stick with the 9-5 (+ nightmare commute) lifestyle. I learned how to read and interpret clinical journal data and stats, and I built a huge roster of healthcare expert sources and PR folks. Fortunately, editors at health sites reached out asking if I'd write for other patients about other autoimmune diseases. I was also moderating patient communities and serving on a patient leadership council. Eventually, I began writing about all aspects of health, not just autoimmunity. For the past few years, I've also focused heavily on writing content for healthcare practitioners themselves (for example, I've written for MDLinx for many years now, covering topics MDs care about). I've also covered medical conferences, reporting on cutting-edge treatments and industry news. It's been a WILD journey. There's no one path to your focus as a writer. Lisa Marie Basile shared this100% this. Just because freelancers aren't full-time doesn't make them less-than or deserving of being demeaned. Many of us *chose* freelance because we've done the 9-5 and it doesn't work for us, or we want more flexibility for health, family, or joy (yes, joy!). And many of us have *been* editors; we largely are uniquely qualified, not green. Freelance is the spine of the industry, and we all know it. I recently encountered an editor whose behavior really threw me: They introduced themselves (and sent me an outrageously demanding, low-paying edit test) by putting down the work of other writers they've edited or tested. This is not okay and it shouldn't be normalized. The power dynamic is illusory and yet very real.Lisa Marie Basile shared thisI've been thinking a lot lately about how the industry talks about/to freelance writers. The language — even from freelancers themselves — can be pretty implicitly negative and/or condescending. Back when I was on Twitter, you couldn't throw a rock without running into an editor complaining about writers. It was just in the water. Sometimes, it would be straight-up complaints; sometimes, the editor means well but still asserts a lopsided power dynamic — like offering advice on how writers can improve their bad pitches. (Not "how to pitch me," but "how to improve your shitty pitches.") Even sentences like "here's how writers can make their editors happy" are interesting. It would be inherently fine in itself, even great (writers absolutely should make editors happy!), but the flipside of this conversation is just as relevant — yet far less common. Of course, sometimes it's obvious language that *doesn't* mean well, like when an editor equates writers to dogs dying for a chomp at the bone. Or the most egregious example: Writers shaming *each other*, usually about rates and ethics. (Oof, don't get me started there! The list is a long one!) The takeaway here? No idea. Just keep an eye out — it's easy to spot low rates; it's less easy to spot messaging. Try not to be a part of it. And writers? You are not servants. You are certainly not dogs. Breaking news: The people who talk like that are not good at their jobs. You have as much value as anyone else in this strange industry. Try not to soak in messages otherwise.

Lisa Marie Basile posted thisA warning to freelance writers, from personal experience: I know the going is tough out there. I see at least 2-3 posts here—daily!—from brilliant, accomplished writers who can't seem to get a single editor to answer their emails, let alone snag an assignment that pays the writer what they're worth. Even when you've diversified your client base and broadened/sharpened your skills...the silence continues. Why? First, there's a lot of folks vying for the same gig. Also, when markets are struggling financially, assignment loads and fees get slashed. Also AI. Le sigh. Here's the warning, based on experience: If an editor crawls out of the woodwork—after alllllll that time sending unanswered emails!—and they're waving the proverbial red flag, don't sacrifice your time, energy, and mental health. Even if you're going through a dry spell, take a step back and listen to your gut. For example, are their requests/expectations unrealistic? Do they send edit tests at midnight on a Saturday, expecting responses by Monday morning? (This is 100% a true story). Are they putting other writers down? (Also true). Is there an obvious runaround or lack of transparency? Do they have sketchy payment practices? Are they basically running a content mill? I too have been an editor. It's absolutely not easy! Most editors are also in an ecosystem of pressure as well—but that doesn't mean they should treat writers badly. The point is: If your gut tells you something is off, listen to it. Each of us gets to decide where the line is between being challenged and being used or poorly treated. I can't say where that line is for anyone but me; it's individual. But you know it. You feel it. I haven't been a perfect writer. I've had my share of learning curves. I've gotten very ill in the middle of a rising career and needed to take time off. I love my writing career, but it isn't always easy. I'm not even saying "easy" is the goal. I'm saying: Don't let unscrupulous, unprofessional people undercut your talent, focus, drive, and creativity.

Not the kind who understands clinical nuance, regulatory expectations, and what a reviewer will flag at a glance. AI will write faster. It might even write well. But it won’t notice that a non-inferiority trial was interpreted as a superiority study. It won’t know that the patient flow diagram contradicts the methods section. It won’t catch that a single line in the discussion quietly discredits the entire conclusion. That’s where we come in. The future isn’t about who types faster. It’s about who thinks deeper. So, if you’re a medical writer, stop competing with AI at sentence-level output. Start owning your value in ✅ Analysis ✅ Interpretation ✅ Strategy ✅ Scientific integrity The clients who know the difference? Those are the ones you want. Let AI assist. Lisa Marie Basile reacted on thisEarlier this year, Windy Pham reached out with an idea to bring together Insulet employees and young people in their community for a networking engagement that would inspire youth with diabetes to understand the roles in the workforce they might want to explore as they consider their futures - and how to build a network to get there. Of course, I said YES! (Windy and I had the pleasure of working together on a mentoring program previously and we had so much fun). This time around didn't disappoint. I loved sharing space with 50 volunteers and students hearing them swap advice, questions, and ideas. Bringing employers and students together is powerful and I'm grateful to Insulet Corporation for making this possible.Lisa Marie Basile reacted on this🤝This month, we had the pleasure of hosting a virtual fireside chat and speed networking event with Insulet Corporation to explore the idea of building connections that count – and how we can open doors through networking. We welcomed over 50 participants to learn from Insulet’s own Lucas Escobar about the importance of networking to find opportunities that you may not have known existed. In Lucas’ thoughtful segment, he mentioned that networking was key to him finding the right role and wants to pay forward these learnings to the next generation. Overall, the students grew confidence in their elevator pitches, improved their introductions, and made new connections with working professionals. In one student’s words: “Seeing how a company like Insulet has vast career options and that there are so many different types of opportunities was great to explore and learn about." Lucky you! 🤪 I still feel like I haven't fully recovered from the trauma of the last layoff and the 18-month job hunt that followed. Searching for a role in today's market can be demoralizing, defeating, and deeeeeply depressing. That said, having been laid off three times in the past four years, I've learned one important thing about myself: I'm bouncy. Like, surprisingly springy. I bounced back after my 2022 layoff. I bounced back after my 2023 layoff. And I will bounce back after my 2026 layoff. Step 1 to bouncing back? Asking for help. So, here it goes: - ✍ I'm a senior editor who wants to get back to editing ASAP. - 🏥 I love working on patient-facing medical content. Gimme! - 👬 Where I go, a book of amazing freelance-writer contacts goes. - 💰 My ideal salary range is $85k-$115k, depending on what the role entails. - 🏠 Remote only, because I'm a better performer when I'm in my safe space. - 🌴 I believe every company should offer health ins., PTO, and a livable wage. - 🐈 Hiring me gets you unlimited cat sightings in all camera-on meetings. To wrap it all up in a discount-store bow (because I'm on a budget now): I'm good at what I do. My track record speaks for itself. Yeah, I've been unlucky, but I've never been laid off due to poor performance. My only sin is that, no matter how volatile this industry gets, I can't quite seem to let go of working with words every day. If I can't be a trust fund baby, I want to be an editor. SO, if you know anyone hiring, I'd be forever grateful if you'd make an intro. (Remember to tell them about the unlimited cat sightings. That usually hooks 'em 🪝)

One question I receive frequently is why I don't offer sample edits. The answer is simple: my specialty is developmental editing. A sample can demonstrate sentence-level execution, but it rarely provides enough context to evaluate structure, pacing, narrative momentum, or story architecture. It was a pleasure to cover this session on some of the tricky nuances of covering medical and health policy studies. Big takeaway: Ask experts the right questions to determine if a health outcome for a community is based on concrete genetic or biological elements, or if there may be an unknown environmental factor at play that researchers don't understand just yet.

When Spellcheck isn’t enough So you’ve just written a research paper, a grant, or another document. You don’t want to spend the time editing, so you rely on Word’s Spellcheck feature to flag and fix any errors. Bad idea. Why? Spellcheck will not catch everything. Sure, it will tell you if you typed “hosre” instead of “horse” or “sodlier” instead of “soldier.” It will also tell you if there is an extra space between two words or if you typed a grammatically incorrect term, such as “ain’t.” (Not that you would ever use “ain’t” in formal writing unless a character in your novel says it…right?)...

I'm delighted to share my new publication in the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA) Journal! 🎉 In the article, I discuss how medical communicators can choose language that recognizes the contributions of people who take part in research. Abstract: "Medical communicators can choose words that influence how people perceive individuals and populations who take part in research. For many years, the term 'subjects' was used ubiquitously and internationally in clinical research. However, this term can fuel disrespect, mistrust, and bias in clinical practice and research. As a result, 'subjects' has been increasingly replaced with the more precise and respectful term 'participants.' However, other terms may more accurately and precisely describe people who take part in clinical research while also recognising their contributions, autonomy, humanity, and individuality with respect, empathy, compassion, and kindness." When cancer care began to shift from acute treatment to long-term management, a new challenge emerged: cardiotoxicity. For many patients, the risk of cardiovascular complications now outweighs the risk of cancer recurrence. At St. Luke's Health System, Luke’s Cancer Institute, one pharmacist saw an opportunity to change that. Marcela Wietstruck Heiss, PharmD, BCOP Heiss, PharmD, stepped into the cardio-oncology clinic and quickly identified the care gap—oncologists and cardiologists were navigating complex drug regimens without the benefit of a pharmacist’s expertise. From managing drug-drug interactions to guiding treatment decisions that minimize cardiac risk, her role became indispensable. A four-week pilot proved the impact: reduced provider time per appointment, improved patient safety, and streamlined care. Today, pharmacists are redefining cardio-oncology. They’re performing early cardiovascular risk assessments, recommending safer alternatives to high-risk therapies, and educating patients about long-term heart health—all while supporting overburdened clinicians.
