You're not an Assistant Editor. You're an Editor. Start saying it. For years, people told me, "You're such a great assistant editor." I'd smile. Say thank you. But something felt off. I was editing footage.  Shaping stories.  Making decisions that shaped the final cut. Yet the label stayed the same. "Assistant." Like a permanent ceiling. Then someone gave me advice that changed everything: "Start introducing yourself as an editor." Not when you get promoted.  Not when someone gives you permission. Now. Here's what I realized: The title "assistant" describes your position. It doesn't describe your skill. You're already editing.  Already making creative decisions.  Already shaping stories. The only thing missing is the way you talk about yourself. Here's why this matters: 1/ Labels shape perception Others see you how you present yourself. 2/ Confidence comes before opportunity No one promotes someone who doesn't believe they're ready. 3/ Waiting for permission is a trap Nobody's coming to knight you "editor." 4/ Your work already speaks You just need your words to match. I stopped saying "I'm an assistant editor." Started saying "I'm an editor." Same skills. Same work. Different energy. And people started treating me differently. Not because anything changed. Because I changed how I introduced myself. The title isn't given. It's claimed. You're not waiting to become an Editor. You already are one. Tip from Your Favorite Editor: Stop overusing “very.” “It was very cold” → begging for a stronger word: freezing, frigid, Arctic tundra (with feelings). “Very” is like plain salt. It's fine, but you can do better. Pro Tip: Replace “very + [adjective]” with one powerful word. It tightens your writing and makes you sound like a thesaurus boss. One thing I always do when editing is ask questions. The most common one I use is, "why?" Why does this character do that? Why do they need to do this? Sometimes these questions appear again and again, repeating throughout pages, and still remain unanswered. It feels like I have just witnessed something that was supposed to be mind-blowing and life-changing, yet somehow it does not feel that way. Something doesn't make sense. And after thinking about it, I realize something is missing. There is an absence of a strong character intention, especially in the protagonist, the character readers are meant to follow and relate to until the end. A story can have events, characters, and structure, yet still feel strangely empty. Often, the issue is emotional. No clear intention from the main character. No real stakes. No emotional anchor. Without intention, the character's actions feel random. Without stakes, the tension cannot be felt. Without emotional grounding, the readers cannot attach. And when readers cannot attach, the story may continue, but the reader may not follow. A story becomes alive when readers know what the character wants, what they fear losing, and why it matters. When readers see those things, the story becomes more than information, it becomes lived experience.
